Peace and Love
The unconscious Irish smuggler
When the Irish monks were spending hours at their parchments, copying and translating classical and religious texts they showed an incredible set of skills which brought us amazing codex and text.
They also gave us some unexpected gems without realising.
When translating “osculum pacis”, literally kiss of peace they took the last word “pacis” -which means peace- for kiss and this choice stuck in the language until this day: póg = kiss.
It turns out that every time we give a póg -a kiss- we unconsciously also give peace.
